To become a Big Brother or Big Sister, you must meet the following requirements:
Community-Based Mentoring Program
- Have lived in the Nashville area for at least three (3) months and plan to be in Nashville for a minimum of one year (during summer also)
- Have a car and automobile insurance
- Have 2-3 hours per week to spend with a child
Site-Based Mentoring Program
- Be age 18 or over... or a High School Junior or Senior through our High School Bigs program.
- Have lived in the Nashville area for at least three (3) months (unless you are a student) and plan to be in Nashville for a minimum of one school year
- Have reliable transportation to get you to and from the facility each week (it doesn't have to be your car)
- Have about 1-1 1/2 hours per week to spend with a child at their school once a week
*You may also apply for "privileges" which means you will be allowed to see the child outside of site, as long as you have your own car with automobile insuranceThe requirements listed above are the minimum requirements for prospective volunteers. You must also have three (3) positive references, an acceptable police check, be free of illegal drug use presently and one year prior to applying, and not be anticipating any major life changes in the near future, such as moving, getting married, having a child, etc. that might affect your commitment to the program. An in-person interview and home assessment are required.
If you have experienced a major life change recently, you should wait approximately six months before applying to as a volunteer. Examples of major life changes are: Divorce, moving, marriage, birth of a child, death of a close relative or friend.
